Distillation Column - Types

Tray Type Column: Tray type column has metal plates (trays). When the mixture is heated and turns into steam, this steam stops at every tray and gradually gets separated. This is the reason why this column is most commonly used in oil refineries and large chemical industries.
Packed Column: Packing materials such as metal rings, ceramic pieces or structured packing are filled inside the packed column. This column is mostly used in small and medium industries such as pharmaceutical factories and chemical units.
Batch Distillation Column: A fixed amount of liquid is poured into this column at one time. After the complete process, the pure substance is extracted. This method is very good for small scale work. It is used in laboratories, making perfumes and preparing special types of chemicals.
Continuous Distillation Column: Continuous Distillation Column is made for large industries. Liquid is continuously poured into it and pure substances keep coming out continuously. It is used a lot in the petroleum industry, large chemical plants and alcohol manufacturing factories.
